Watch Full Show! Listen!Greg and Pat share how they were doing all they could to raise money to sponsor more fatherless boys to be able to come to the Next Step Outback Father and Son Camping Trips. Not only do fatherless children not have fathers in their live, but they also often live in poverty because of their mother having only a single income to raise all her children. One year, as a way to help raise money to sponsor more fatherless boys to be able to come, they decided to have a raffle. They chose a large screen TV from their local Sam’s Club, who by the way were one of the sponsors for the Next Step Outback’s, and began their raffle. Convicted to make sure what we were doing wasn’t or didn’t look like a lottery, Greg told the leadership, repeatedly, “This is not a lottery!” Greg made sure that everyone on the team was aware, this is NOT a Lottery. As Greg was sharing about the Next Step Outback and the need to raise money for the fatherless, on a local television network, BLAB TV, the first thing that came out of Greg’s mouth on LIVE TV was, “We’re having a lottery.” It was a hilarious moment after all this buildup of him saying this is not a lottery! God is and was faithful each year, for almost ten years, assuring we had an awesome encounter with fathers, sons, fatherless sons, and mentors at these events. God would always show up with His glory presence and melt our hearts. You can see all those who attended standing in front of an 8,000 square foot tent that was called the “Tent of Meetings” where all came to meet our Father and our Father (God) came to meet us. Truly, it was a time of the hearts of the fathers turning to the hearts of the children and the hearts of the children turning to the hearts of the fathers. It seems like people are terrified to be the Church. God blesses people, gives them jobs, heals them, but they don’t bring Him up! Why do people fear what people think by bringing God up? In America we will lose our country if the Church doesn’t speak up and give Him the glory! The world doesn’t know that God is doing the good in our nation because the Church is not saying anything. Brother Charles Simpson continues the conversation and says the biggest frustration for him is “getting the Church out of the church (building).”
Even in the Church, people are not connecting and are like a dysfunctional family, living like orphans! We are called to be family but have messed up the definition of family. Since the Church has messed up what family is, that could be why family is messed up in the nation. Brother Charles says, “We have lost 80% of our young people and fatherhood is the number one problem in the world.” He focuses on ministering to men because if “men will turn their hearts to God, for the most part women will stand with them, and children will be more likely to stay with the Lord too.”
At VFNKB, we ministered to men through the Next Step Outback camping trips making an atmosphere for God to meet men and their sons. We even had mentors for fatherless sons, and they were impacted so much that even now they say how the Next Step Outback changed their life.
They continue to talk about family, and Greg shares how many times he feels more loved and cared for by those who are not followers of Jesus than those who profess to follow Him. Jesus had more mercy on the adulterous woman and tax collectors than He did on the religious leaders! Brother Charles tells people that, “prostitutes and addicts have never hurt me, but Christians would like to kill me…if we don’t have authenticity in our faith then it’s dangerous because you are walking on thin ice.”
It is important to write out your testimony and to be real with others so that anyone can see that you are human. We also need to be real and honest before God! “God can help an honest person. A person who is not willing, to be honest, is going to be in trouble.” When we try to do things in our own strength we will eventually crash, but when we depend on God and trust Him then things can be accomplished through His grace. He gets all the glory!
As the Church, since we are a family, we must allow the Father’s perfect love to guide us which will drive out fear as He changes our nature and character by developing us into who He created us to be! Charles was reading Jesus’ Words about His yoke being easy,

“I realized that I had fashioned my own yoke. It wasn’t His. I was trying to live the way I thought that a pastor was supposed to be…and it was chaffing me.” He says this is what drove him to seek the baptism of the Holy Spirit! He needed to experience something new, or he was going to leave the ministry. He was reminding God that he didn’t even want to be in the ministry originally and was telling Him he knew it wasn’t going to work out. God used this time to draw him closer and to bless him.
“You have to get real. I don’t mean that it isn’t hard sometimes. Sometimes it is hard, but there is grace.”
“But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for My power is made perfect in weakness.” 2 Corinthians 12:9a ESV
“When you are out of grace that is a clue that you are in the wrong place, or you haven’t been sensitive to God.” Many people may only think they can experience or have Holy Spirit at a church (building), but He is with you everywhere! You can experience Him wherever you are because you are the temple of God and His Spirit is in you!
One way the Spirit can manifest is by helping you to “know” people. Jesus knew people; He looked in the heart of people not just at them. Former NFL Player Benjamin Watson Boldly Lays Out the Case Family, God, and Country at CPAC
It is encouraging to see believers step out in the Entertainment Mountain for God! Former NFL player Benjamin Watson has boldly stood for God, family and his country, America, in his career and life. We share with you his empowering speech about the importance of family at CPAC, Conservative Political Action Conference, 2019.
Watson is a father of five children with twins on the way! He says that family is very important to him and he has seen the changes in American families. We are not replacing ourselves! We need 2.1 kids to replace ourselves, and America is at 1.7. Our culture is dying! “That needs to change and that only changes when people understand the importance of family.”
“Behold, children are a heritage from the Lord, the fruit of the womb a reward. Like arrows in the hand of a warrior are the children of one’s youth. Blessed is the man who fills his quiver with them! He shall not be put to shame when he speaks with his enemies in the gate.” Psalm 127:3-5 ESV
“Children are like weapons! They are. Children are like weapons that we pull out and that we shoot into culture. Think about the effect that we have when we raise our children the correct way, when we instill values into them, they change culture.” Watson is the oldest of six kids, and his father talks about how his children are going places he was never able to go. It is because they instilled values into their children, and they are around the world doing things for the Lord and humanity!
“If you have children pour into them, children are a blessing while society would tell you they are not. Family is a gift ordained by our Creator; it should be cherished not mocked. Upheld, not ridiculed, kept together not torn apart. So much of what we see today is tearing us apart. It is tearing families apart. We see mother turned against father; we see sister turned against brother, we see parents turned against children because of outside influences…”
Watson talks about his book Under Our Skin and that we need to talk about the hard things like race in our culture. “Family is the most important and powerful weapon when it comes to changing culture…the living room is as important as the courtroom when it comes to making change.” He asks us what the conversations are that we have about race in our living rooms? What are the faces or expressions when issues of race come up? Our children or grandchildren absorb everything that we do! “As parents, that’s our job, the living room is [where we can be] teaching them how to think, how to be compassionate, how to be kind and how to be loving. How to fight for the oppressed and how to fight for justice. All those things are taught not at the university, not outside on our teams, not at our schools; they are taught in the home. The home is where we train them up, where we teach them to care about other people.
“As a nation, I would say that the strength of our families will ensure our future, or it will condemn it. When it comes to unity and solidarity moving forward into the future, a lot of that depends on what happens in the family. We can’t trust outside influences to train them; we need to be doing that in our homes.”
“The life of a nation is secure only while the nation is honest, truthful, and virtuous.” Frederick Douglas, Abolitionist
“Families pass on honesty, truth, and virtues needed for healthy interpersonal relationships as well as community relationships. All that stuff starts in the home, and our nation will only survive if honesty, truth, and virtues remain paramount. That’s how it is going to survive. The fighting, the bickering, there is always going to be some of that. We all have different views; we all come from different places. We all have different worldviews, and that’s okay. It’s okay to be different, it’s okay to have different perspectives, but there are certain things that need to be held paramount for this country to succeed. Honesty, truth, and virtues. We need all to be able to come together for that. If the truth is not what you think it is, you need to be willing to say it’s not what you thought it was and move to the other side, that’s okay! Because winning the argument can’t be our only reason for getting involved as conservative/liberals in conversation. It can’t just be about winning. It has to be about what is true, what is honest, what is virtuous.”
Watson speaks next about fatherlessness in America. “We have somewhat of an epidemic I would say, across the board, in this country. According to some statistics, one out four children lives without a father in the home. Not a father period, not just biological, but no uncle, a father figure, not a father period in the home. That’s how 19 million children in the United States live. Maybe you lived without one, and that’s not to say that you can’t be successful, but all studies point to the fact that many social ills would be eradicated if fathers, if men, would do what we were called to be.” He shares how men can break the cycle for their family but also society by being there for their family!

Watson shares how the following scripture is his family’s mission because someone who walks humbly with God and stands for justice, mercy, and kindness is one who will be remembered!
“He has told you, O man, what is good; and what does the Lord require of you but to do justice, and to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God?” Micah 6:8 ESV
“First thing for our children is to model this as parents. We need to be people who correct and challenge ideals, systems, prejudices, biases that are wrong. We need to be willing to identify things for what they are and have the courage to stand for what is right. And the courage to give people their just due. Justice is uncomfortable sometimes. Sometimes it will take you stepping outside of your group because our groups sometimes are going the wrong direction…we need to be people who act justly and correct these things.”
Watson continues, “Secondly we need to be people who are kind. We need to respect each other’s humanity…we are created in the image of God. We are all image bearers. Whether we wear blue or red, whether we are black or white, whether we are poor or very wealthy, we need to have a common respect for all humanity, because we are image bearers of Him.”
He shares his third point, humility, “Humility is not weakness, I say it as a football player, humility is not weakness, but it is posturing yourself in a way to understand that it’s not all about you. You are not the most important thing or the most important person. As a matter of fact, someone else has equal value to you no matter what their occupation is. Humility before God makes you humble before people. It opens lines of communication.” Hostility closes lines of communication but when you posture yourself in humility that will open the lines of communication.
He continues to speak on racism and how we need to realize that our differences are not better than someone else and to celebrate our differences because God created us this way!
Also, he shares about the sanctity of life and the fact that 60 million babies have been killed since Roe v Wade was passed. Don’t be distracted by this extreme and defend life from conception until death, being pro-whole life! This is truly pro-life.
Another injustice he talks about is sex-trafficking. There are 2 million children currently traded and exploited for sex around the world including America.
“What voice has God given you to stand in the gap for them? Not just for abortion but also for this issue…Justice issues are a seamless garment. We don’t have to stand for one issue; we can multi-task…we can be people who stand for multiple issues because they all fall under the issue of justice.”
Watson shares several more injustices giving us the wisdom of how to fight for justice for each of them together as a family! He challenges us to be a people willing to bind up the nation just as Abraham Lincoln implored Americans to do.
“With malice toward none; with charity for all; with firmness in the right, as God gives us to see the right, let us strive on to finish the work we are in; to bind up the nation’s wounds; to care for him who shall have borne the battle, and for his widow, and his orphan—to do all which may achieve and cherish a just, and a lasting peace, among ourselves, and with all nations.” Abraham Lincoln
Watson has set an example for everyone on how we can use our platforms wherever we are for the Kingdom of God and to speak on truth! We can have a respectful dialogue with those that we meet every day and share the truth. Also, we must remember that family has been around since the beginning of time and it is something that we must value! We need to see children as a blessing versus an inconvenience and to pray for Americans to see children as a blessing again. We want to know your thoughts on this program. Father and Son Camping Trip; Lasting Impact Over a Decade Later: Personal Story of a Man who Attended as a Young Boy
It all began in 1998 when Greg was given a Malachi mandate from the Lord and was called to function and prosper under this mandate to help turn the hearts of the fathers to the children and the hearts of the children to the fathers.
“See, I will send the prophet Elijah to you before that great and dreadful day of the Lord comes. He will turn the hearts of the parents to their children, and the hearts of the children to their parents; or else I will come and strike the land with total destruction.” Malachi 4:5-6
This began as an adventure of the Next Step Outback Father and Son Camping Trip. For ten years we walked out this prophecy, and it was amazing what God was doing during this time. Thousands of fathers and sons attended these events and were changed forever. One young boy describes the ‘Tunnel of Tears’ which was a line where fathers stood on each side and formed a tunnel as the boys and young men walked through. As this happened, tears would pour, and hearts were changed as the sons were loved on by all the fathers. “Tunnel of tears, that was nice because they (fathers) told me they loved me. That God had something special for me and that something good was going to happen to me in my life. I’d have to say what has been the best part of this camping trip is having the time to spend with fathers and mentors and for children to really get close to their male family side. It is very hard because fathers are busy trying to work and this was a great thing for Pensacola. It makes me feel really loved.”
Some of the sons did not have fathers in their lives, so there were mentors who stood in the gap and fathered the son during this trip and even sometimes beyond. A father also shares about his revelation that he received from his time on the camping trip. “I have come to realize there is nothing more important than your family. Your time is nothing; your families time is everything, and that is what it is all about.”
Another father also shares his experience, “What happened tonight I think it was a transformation. It was awesome! I have never seen so much love and out-breaking of kindness and emotion. And I have been to several revivals and events but nothing like this. This is something I am going to take with me the rest of my life and I know my son will too. The biggest thing of all I know this has made us closer than we have ever been in our life. And for that, I am very grateful that I came.”
Rodrick Brooks who attended the Next Step Outback for four years recently ran into John, and they were able to catch up. We have an interview as he shares his experience about the mentors that were available when a son did not have a father, and he was taught to be somebody. John asked him how he felt about the camping trip. “I felt relieved because I didn’t have a dad in my life. So, with us having a mentor every year it was a pleasure, and I enjoyed it.”
Next, Rodrick talks about the ‘Tunnel of Tears,’ “It was touching, you go in there, you were going to cry. I am just saying that it was touching. Because a lot of people didn’t have dads and they sponsored for us, the ones that didn’t have money…it was very nice.” He shares his gratefulness to the Next Step Outback team and how every year he was ready to go on the camping trip. He was a troubled kid, but that time touched him, and if he had kids, he would know how to treat them.
Over the years the camping trip evolved from only fathers and sons to family. Where parents could bring their children and a family learned to be family again. Many families don’t know how to be a family, and it has gotten to the point that young adults need to take ‘Adulting’ classes to learn how to function as an adult. God has called us to be family! Children need to be taught by their parents how to be family so that they can function in life. Also, as the Church, we are called to teach the same, how to be family! If we love one another, we will teach others how to function in life and teach others to be successful.
“By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.” John 13:35
